Hautes Pyrénées The Area.

The Hautes Pyrénées is a department (number 65) of the Midi Pyrénées region. The Midi Pyrénées is the largest geographical region in France covering a surface of over 45,300km2 -larger than eight European Union member states including Belgium and larger than Switzerland. The Midi Pyrénées comprises 8 departments, The Ariège (09), Aveyron (12), Gers(32), Haute-Garonne (31), Hautes-Pyrénées(65), Lot (46), Tarn (81) and Tarn-et-Garonne (82). With over 2,500,000 inhabitants, the majority residing in and around the hub of Toulouse the regional capital, the countryside itself has the lowest population density in France, under half the national average at around 54 inhabitants per square kilometre. Geographically, the area is situated midway between the Atlantic Ocean and  long sandy beaches and high roller waves favoured by the surfing community and the Mediterranean sea -  beaches, sun and Mediterranean diet . Both coasts are easily accessible with the excellent autoroutes that cross from west to east.

At the southern end of the region lies the Hautes  Pyrénées with the border between France and Spain (with the Principality of Andorra also easily accessible by road). The mountains are seriously high and rise to over 3000 metres, obviously offering all the attractions of winter sports, summer walks, trekking. The area is very popular with skiers of all nationalities and all ages and all proficiencies.

Industry in The Pyrénées

The economy of the region has a number of key individual sectors, from the high tech aeronautics and space industry based around the city of Toulouse to the tourism, agricultural and food processing industry harnassing the natural high quality products of the area for commercial global use -truffles,  foie gras, cassoulet, bigorre hams, Query lamb, Rocamadour goat chees, Lautrec garlic, and much much more.

The vineyards of the region are highly regarded in wine circles, the Aemagnac vineyard is world famous and the Gaillac vineyard is one of the oldest on record in France.

 Culture ofThe Pyrénées 

The region has been home to many famous painters, writers, scholars, historians.....and it has its own language too, Occitan which once was banned and in more recent times only spoken by the elderly has been revitalised throughout the area.

Sport, too, is a hugely important part of life here, the rugby culture touches practically every town and village. Not to mention the sports enjoyed in the mountain areas of The  Pyrénées, skiing primarily but closely followed by all manner of extreme sports and not forgetting the annual pilgrimage of Le Tour - The Tour de France, winding its way through various sections of the mountains and valleys of The Midi Pyrénées.

Lourdes, a small market town with the most hotels outside of Paris is an internationally renowed centre for pilgrims to visit the shrine where in 1858 it is said, a young Bernadette Soubirous was visited by Our Lady of Lourdes and the Miracle of Lourdes was born and annually receives approx 5,000,000 visitors.

There are many local markets and farmers markets held on a daily basis where it is a pleasure just to walk around viewing the multitude of locally produced  goods and foods, also the region has its famed brocanties and antique markets.

Toulouse is the regional capital, known as the pink city or ville rose on account of the colour of the buildings. The city has much to offer visitors and is famed as stated for its aeronautic and space industry, the headquarters of Airbus, the Galileo positioning system, the SPOT satellite system and CNES's the largest space center in Europe. There is of course the shopping and sight seeing with many splendid architectuaral and religious buildings. The gastronomy is to be sampled with the famed Saucisses de Toulouse, foie gras and cassoulet along with the splendid wines of the region.

Getting to The Hautes  Pyrénées

Access and transportation systems are top rate with the high speed train (TGV) passing via Toulouse, Tarbes, onwards to Belgium, UK and now the southern route to Spain.

The main airport for the region is based in Toulouse Blagnac, with smaller regional airports at Pau, and Lourdes Tarbes in the south, services by low cost ait carriers such as Ryan Air. Road networks are good and the area is crossed by the Autoroute A 61 from west coast to east coast and intersections north to Paris and beyond and south to Barcelona, Madrid (Spain).
