The Hautes Pyrénées is a department (number 65) of the Midi Pyrénées region. The Midi Pyrénées is the largest geographical region in France covering a surface of over 45,300km2 -larger than eight European Union member states including Belgium and larger than Switzerland. Toulouse is the regional capital, known as the pink city or ville rose on account of the colour of the buildings. The city has much to offer visitors and is famed as stated for its aeronautic and space industry, the headquarters of Airbus, the Galileo positioning system, the SPOT satellite system and CNES's the largest space center in Europe. There is of course the shopping and sight seeing with many splendid architectuaral and religious buildings. The gastronomy is to be sampled with the famed Saucisses de Toulouse, foie gras and cassoulet along with the splendid wines of the region.
Getting to The Hautes Pyrénées
Access and transportation systems are top rate with the high speed train (TGV) passing via Toulouse, Tarbes, onwards to Belgium, UK and now the southern route to Spain.
The main airport for the region is based in Toulouse Blagnac, with smaller regional airports at Pau, and Lourdes Tarbes in the south, services by low cost ait carriers such as Ryan Air. Road networks are good and the area is crossed by the Autoroute A 61 from west coast to east coast and intersections north to Paris and beyond and south to Barcelona, Madrid (Spain).
